Tarlac State University- College of Business of Business and Accountancy in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) conducted an extension activity titled Branding and Packaging Services for the Indigenous People of Mayantoc, Tarlac. This activity is part of the extension services support of the university to the different indigenous communities enlisted in the Community through the Science and Technology (CEST) program of DOST.
Mr. Dante C. Fernandez Jr., a faculty expert from Marketing Management Department, and Ms. Christine Janelle M. Santiago, college extension chairperson, led the activity with the goal of creating an appealing and effective packaging that can help the product stand out on the market and appeal to potential customers. The task entails creating and laying out packaging for different products such as turmeric tea, turmeric powder, taro jam, and taro filling. DOST helped the beneficiaries learn how to make the said products through a series of trainings.
Ms. Reissa Joselle D. Gopez, chairperson of the Marketing Management (MM) Department then presented the completed designs to the Indigenous People of Mayantoc and was supported and assisted other faculty members from MM Department namely Dr. Hazel T. Mabborang, Ms. Ronalyn Ann Marie E. Diaz, Mr. Peping Pedro C. Pedro, and Mr. Fernandez.
The beneficiaries were thrilled with the finished labels and packaging. One of the participants, Ms. Judelyn I. Papa, stressed that the packaging will be a major assistance to sell their product since most customers were reluctant to buy their items due to lack of packing. As the community lacked the funds to print and create the packaging, the participants then asked DOST and the Local Government Unit-Mayantoc (LGU-Mayantoc) for assistance or funding. The project assistant from DOST, Ms. Cristina T. Isla, vowed to coordinate the participants' requests to their organization.
In addition, the completed designs were also presented to LGU-Mayantoc headed by its Municipal Mayor, Hon. Iluminado Pobre Jr. Hon. Pobre approved the designs and promised to support the production of the labels if the beneficiaries will establish and create their own cooperative.
If the production will go on, the completed extension activity of CBA-MM Department will assist the businesses to grow efficiently and reach their highest potential. This will guarantee a business’s profitability that will be helpful in providing the necessities of the owner or the community. Thus, the activity would directly contribute to Goals 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and 2 (Zero hunger) of the Sustainable Development goals (SDG).
Furthermore, the activity is contributory to Goal 17 (Partnership of Goals) of SDG. It builds partnership with DOST, Indigenous People of Mayantoc, and TSU.
