TSU – College of Arts and Social Sciences, through the Psychology Department, conducted a 2-day Disability Sensitivity Training and Stress Management Activity on November 10 and 11, 2022 at DSWD Amor Village, Anao, Tarlac.
Aimed to raise the staff’s awareness and knowledge about the condition of their clients and to help them cope with work-related stress, particularly in managing children with special needs, the activity accommodated almost sixty personnel and staff of DSWD Amor Village. Most participants are houseparents whose main duty is to take care of the children with special needs who are being accommodated in the center.
Dr. Editha Q. Villavicencio and Ms. Julia Yvette P. Miranda served as resource speakers for Day 1 while Ms. Angela Christinne V. Pangilinan and Ms. Mary Joy R. Facun were the resource speakers for Day 2. The speakers discussed topics covering the different types of disabilities and mental health awareness. Moreover, activities like games were also conducted in connection with stress management training.
An open forum was also held after the lecture to give the participants some advice regarding their issues concerning their job as houseparents. Some participants sought advice regarding how to handle different scenarios such as misbehaviours and challenges they encounter when assisting their clients.
This completed extension activity of CASS contributes to Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Agenda. One of the important factors to consider in the rehabilitation of residents is to provide interventions that are beneficial for their social and psychological well-being. Likewise, the welfare of the staff is also one of the concerns, thus, centers like DSWD Amor Village continually provide opportunities for capability building and mental health activity to the staff and be able to deliver efficient programs and services to the clients.
