TSU-COE DELIVERS SEMINAR-WORKSHOP ON BASIC ELECTRICAL SAFETY FOR SMCES

In line with the partnership of Tarlac State University – College of Engineering (TSU-COE) and the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines, Inc.-Tarlac Chapter (IIEE-TC), Electrical Engineering Department conducted a one-day extension training-workshop on Electrical Fire Safety Awareness and Practices on March 19, 2024, at the San Miguel Central Elementary School (SMCES).

Prior to the event, Dr. Alona Mallari, SMCES Principal, and Ms. Nerissa P. Sidora, SMCES-Project Development Officer, signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to formally seal and embark on the extension seminar entitled: "SEMINAR-WORSHOP IN BASIC ELECTRICAL FIRE SAFETY". This MOA signing was made possible through the collaboration of the IIEE-TC President, Engr. Judy Estrada, and Expert Service Providers (ESPs) from the Electrical Engineering headed by Engr. Miriam Galvez, Engr. Crispin Flora, Engr. Maan Florendo, Engr. Enalyn Domingo, and Engr. Cid Lapuz.   

 

In her welcome remarks, Dr. Mallari, expressed gratitude for ESPs, "Maraming salamat po sa ating mga engineers na mags’share ng kanilang kaalaman patungkol sa Fire Safety Awareness and Practices”, she said. She also introduced the ESPs to the students, teaching and non-teaching personnel, and parents from SMCES.   

 

Engr. Miriam Galvez, the resource speaker, commenced the activity with an Electrical Safety Seminar-Workshop, which aimed to enhance awareness regarding potential dangers and uncertainties within the school environment and advocate for secure responses in emergencies, safeguarding the welfare of students, educators, and staff. Beneficiaries learned the different risks associated with electricity use and earthquakes. Engr. Galvez also discussed the dos and don’ts of Electrical Safety and enumerated some safe practices and procedures for school; she ended her talk with the quote: “Nobody is safe until everybody is safe.”   

 

The subsequent topic, entitled: Ensuring Electrical Safety at School: Guidelines for Students and Staff was put into words by the second resource speaker, Engr. Crispin I. Flora. He enumerated the importance of electrical safety for students and school staff. The Triangle of Fire and Fire Extinguisher Basics was also mentioned in his topic.   

 

Students enthusiastically participated in the question-and-answer workshop facilitated by Engr. Galvez, Engr. Flora, Engr. Florendo, Engr. Domingo, and Engr. Lapuz. For the conclusion of the event, Ms. Sidora and Dr. Mallari awarded the Certificate of Recognition to Resource Speakers: Engr. Galvez and Engr. Flora and Technical Facilitators: Engr. Florendo, Engr. Domingo, and Engr. Lapuz.  

 

 The training workshop provided life-long learning and awareness of Basic Electrical Safety. This completed COE extension activity contributes to Goal 4 (Quality Education) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
