A two-day (2) extension service devotedly committed by the Tarlac State University – College of Science under the Chemistry Department. With a titled “Technical Consultancy on The Effectiveness of Coffee (Cofea Arabica) Grounds as a Mosquito Repellent Spray”. The focus of this research is to demonstrate the effectiveness of using coffee grounds to repel mosquitoes. This spray can primarily be used as a mosquito repellent, contributing to reduce the amount of diseases spread by mosquitos. The study's findings will be extremely beneficial to the following groups: communities, entomologists, and future researchers.
Prof. Claire Lagrana, Ms. Angelica Tabamo, and Mr. Jadriel Meg Cabanding, experts from the Department of Chemistry, who played an active role in completing the two-day extension service effectively. On February 28, 2023, a consensus conversation was held between students from Tarlac Montessori School, who have been served as beneficiaries of the abovementioned extension, prior to the significant implementation of experimentation. Furthermore, presenting suggestions and techniques was shown to improve the reliability and efficiency of the experimentation.
As a result, on March 30, 2023, after several weeks of preparation. The students carried out the experiment under the supervision of COS professionals, who also recommended all of the equipment to be employed during the experiment for the coffee grounds, which would eventually serve as a mosquito repellent spray.
Furthermore, these mosquitos are vectors for a variety of diseases, including dengue fever, yellow fever, malaria, and the Zika virus. This is why industries developed repellents to prevent or avoid these infections, and there are already several treatments that have been demonstrated to be effective. Plants, on the other hand, such as coffee grounds, can repel pests, particularly mosquitoes. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of using coffee grounds to repel mosquitoes. The study's objective will be to determine the effect of the coffee grounds repellent spray on mosquitoes that bite and feed on human blood, which is a prevalent problem because they can pose a major health risk to people. Nonetheless, it can contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4: Excellent Education. According to the aforementioned rendered service, the repellent spray including coffee grounds is beneficial in preventing mosquito-borne infections. Correspondingly, it may be anticipated that with extensive investigation and studies, we can still identify and uncover things that will help us improve in order to mitigate the danger caused by such uncommon phenomena.
