The Tarlac State University (TSU) – College of Engineering and Technology (CET) in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) continues to train and educate Indigenous Communities (IPs) in the province of Tarlac. The activity entitled “Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Seminar” which was offered by the faculties from Industrial Engineering Department and was held on December 5, 2022, at Sitio Dueg, Brgy. Maasin, San Clemente, Tarlac.
This activity aimed to provide information, education, and communication materials related to safety, emergency, and disaster preparedness, as well as to protect the communities by introducing science-based information technologies for disaster prevention and mitigation. In addition, this extension activity aimed to capacitate the knowledge and skills relative to Emergency and Disaster Preparedness of IPs from the different municipalities in the Province of Tarlac.
The expert service providers were Engr. Ann Jeannette Lopez and Engr. Dick Tuazon. They were also companied by the College Extension Chairperson (CEC), Engr. Renz Paul Quiambao, and Mr. Danilo Alcantara, a staff member from DOST - PSTC. The first speaker of the said activity was Engr. Ann Jeannette Lopez, she discussed how to be prepared in an emergency and mentioned various hazards and their impact on our communities. During a disaster, Engr. Lopez reminded the participants to always look for evacuation centers or safe places. Additionally, she emphasized the importance of having an emergency or survival kit. To conclude her presentation, she provided various hotline numbers to the participants in case of an emergency.
At the end of the activity, participants were able to observe and learn from Engr. Dick S. Tuazon on how to use a fire extinguisher in a step-by-step procedure, and they also received leaflets titled "Handa Ka Ba" An Emergency and Disaster Preparedness IEC Material prepared by the expert service providers.
As the seminar provides life-long learning and awareness of the Dos and Don’ts during emergencies and disasters, this completed CET extension activity contributes to Goal 4 (Quality Education) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Furthermore, the seminar contributes to Goal 13 (Climate Action) by encouraging participants' vigilance and responsive capacity to hazards and natural disasters. Furthermore, by establishing connections between TSU, DOST, and Sitio Dueg IPs, the activity contributes to SDG Goal 17 (Partnership for Goals).
