On July 31, 2025, a seminar under the Lugud 2.0 initiative began with a warm opening remark from Mr. Roberto Y. Suagart, hosted by Ms. Pamela Marie Ponce, both teachers from the Department of Education (DepEd). This was followed by a roll call of each school representative, who recited the LUGUD acronym in its Filipino form: Lingkod, Ugali, Gawa, Unlad, Dangal, along with their school name.
The seminar continued with an enthusiastic welcome for the speaker, Dr. Niño B. Corpuz, who presented on the topic of “Family Engagement” within the early childhood segment of the Lugud 2.0 program.
Dr. Corpuz began his presentation by asking the participants about their years of teaching experience. The teachers actively engaged by responding and participating in a warm-up activity led by the resource speaker. Following this, he emphasized the importance of visual aids for children, stating that they should utilize their five to six senses for optimum development. He asserted, “Teaching children should be experimental in nature,” highlighting that children needed the freedom to explore their environment to learn and experience the physical world.
After the initial discussion, Dr. Corpuz initiated a game where participants guessed trending online applications such as Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok. The teachers were fully engaged in this activity. He also touched upon Gen Z slang, explaining terms like TBT (Throwback Thursday) and IDK (I don’t know). Additionally, he shared strategies to help parents understand their children while navigating the fast-paced modern environment. Dr. Corpuz emphasized the importance of building connections with children, particularly at home. He encouraged empathy, unconditional positive reinforcement, and a non-judgmental approach to understanding the perspectives of today’s children.
As the discussion neared its conclusion, Dr. Corpuz organized a group presentation exploring the characteristics of children through the framework of Head, Heart, and Hands. This allowed teachers to reflect on how these aspects relate to their students. Following the group activity, the seminar included a discussion on different types of parents, such as helicopter parents, ghost parents, and those who struggle to accept the truth about their children. Dr. Corpuz also shared tips on the "8 P’s" for parental engagement: Purpose, Piece of Cake, Personality, Persistence, Personalization, Public, Praise, and Provide Support. The session concluded with meaningful quotes from Dr. Corpuz.
Afterward, Dr. Maria Agnes P. Ladia, the overall project head of Lugud and Dean of the Graduate School, delivered an inspirational message touching on effective teaching techniques for DepEd teachers.
Concluding the seminar, a brief awarding ceremony was held to honor Dr. Niño B. Corpuz, our resource speaker, and Dr. Maria Agnes P. Ladia, the overall project head of Lugud 2.0 and Dean of the Graduate School. During the ceremony, a message of gratitude was delivered, followed by a photo opportunity featuring the DepEd Teachers and the Principal of Burot Integrated School, Dr. Mamerto Ragel.
